Attached is a recent submission that we made to the Compliance and Enforcement Working Party on various issues but predominantly in regard to Category 1 publications. This group reports to the State Attorneys General (SCAG). Many of you will have read in the newspapers and heard on the radio that there are a number of organisations outraged by 'porn' being sold next to 'lollipops' in petrol stations and newsagents. These groups have enlisted the willing assistance of QLD Senator Barnaby Joyce and Tasmanian Senator Guy Barnett (link to media release ).
In response to the haranguing that the Classification Board and its related public servants have received in senate estimates, the working party was established. They are considering, among other things, combining category 1 and category 2 or forcing category one magazines into adult shops only. Of course just removing adult magazines is a no brainer for them and gets the anti porn groups off their backs but the fact is it won't solve the problem. The cowboys already break the law and a change to the law is not going to fix that. We argue that the issue is about enforcing and fixing the very broken and over priced classification system. Let me know what you think. Fiona Patten Executive Officer PDF
