The Eros Association Inc is Australia's national adult retail and entertainment association. We function in the same way as other peak industry groups like the Pharmacy Guild or the Motor Traders Association in that we unify our members, lobby government and run a professional and ongoing public relations campaign.

Established in 1992, Eros is the longest serving adult industry group in Australia and we have earned a reputation for integrity and professionalism in our activities. We seek to bring logical and popular perspectives to love and sex rather than moral or religious ones. 'Make love not war' is the philosophy that we bring to our political debates.

Although issues of sex, morality and the law are found throughout the site, it is not intended for titillation but rather for information and education.

New PollNew Poll Shows Politicians Out of Touch With Sexual Attitudes

Results from the latest independent poll on community attitudes towards X18+ films in Australia have just been announced. The survey was carried out by Newspoll - one of Australia’s most reputable polling companies – on the 27th-29th June, 2008.

The aim of the survey was to show whether or not the prohibition on the sale of federally classified, X18+ films from age restricted adult shops in all states of Australia, was supported by the majority of voters or not. A ‘majority community opinion’ is the only reason ever put forward by the State Attorney’s General to justify this prohibition.

The results show conclusively that the prohibition is not popular with the majority of adults in all states. Proportionately weighted, so as to take into account the ‘don’t knows’ ,71.7% of respondents in the Australian states rejected their government’s prohibition on the sale of X18+ films, while only 26% agreed with it.

Further proof of the unpopularity of this prohibition was found in the personal details of those who voted against it. Of those in favour of legalising sales of classified X18+ films from age-restricted adult shops, 79.8% had children and most were earning over $70,000 a year. In other words, ‘working families’. This is Labor’s heartland.

Fiona PattenCurrent Trends in Adult Business On the World Wide Web

The Internet Industry Association is Australia’s peak lobby group for Internet Service Providers and asked Eros CEO, Fiona Patten, to address their May industry briefing. Following is an edited text of her talk

The Internet Industry Association (www.iia.org.au), the national association representing a broad range of Australian businesses including telecommunications carriers, banks and ISPs, recently invited me to speak about new technologies that the adult industry is now using and how they may provide cues for mainstream ecommerce. As leaders in ecommerce for many years, the aim of the discussion was to have us focus particularly on the Web 2 phenomenon.

The term Web 2 is confusing and means many things to many people.  To me it basically means that the community is creating the content and interacting directly with each other. Mainstream examples are Wikipedia, Myspace, youtube and eBay. Adult examples are redhotpie.com and youporn. Incidentally ‘porn + tube’ is one of the most searched for terms on Google. And if Myspace were a country it would be the 7th largest inthe world. Wikipedia is the largest volume of English text ever.

There are many ways that the adult industry handles commerce on the net differently from mainstream businesses. Often that is because we are treated differently by government authorities, business regulators and mainstream entertainment companies and maybe this is the reason why we have been so innovative in the past. We have had to be to survive.
